Lithium-Ion Battery Pack

What is a Li-ion Battery Pack?

A Li-ion battery pack is a battery system composed of multiple lithium-ion battery cells. It typically includes the battery cells, a Battery Management System (BMS), a casing, and charge/discharge circuits.

Difference Between Series and Parallel Connections in Li-ion Battery Packs

  • Series Connection: Increases the total voltage of the battery pack, which is the sum of the voltages of each cell. The capacity (mAh) remains the same.

  • Parallel Connection: Increases the total capacity (mAh) of the battery pack, which is the sum of the capacities of each cell. The voltage remains the same.

Applications of Li-ion Battery Packs

Li-ion battery packs are commonly used in various small to medium-sized electronic devices. In everyday life, they are found in items like flashlights and power banks. In industrial settings, they are used in robots, underwater cameras, and industrial power tools like drills and saws.

What Does "4s1p" Mean in a Li-ion Battery Pack?

"4s1p" describes the configuration of a battery pack. "4s" means the pack consists of 4 cells connected in series. "1p" means there is one parallel group of cells. A "4s1p" LiFePO4 battery pack has a total voltage that is the sum of the voltages of the 4 cells, and a total capacity equal to that of a single cell.

How Long Do Li-ion Battery Packs Last?

Generally, Li-ion batteries last between 300 to 500 charge cycles, roughly equivalent to 3 to 5 years. However, Pknergy's high-quality lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, such as 18650 or 21700 cells, can last 800 to 1000 charge cycles.

Why Is a Li-ion Battery Dead?

There are several common reasons:

  1. Battery aging.

  2. Overcharging or over-discharging.

  3. Operating beyond the recommended temperature range.

  4. Physical damage.

  5. Long periods of inactivity causing self-discharge to the point where the battery cannot recover.
